Maurer Court
Design process
English Partnerships acquired the Greenwich peninsular site in 1997. They prepared a two-stage brief for the redevelopment of the 17.81 ha GMV site and worked with Erskine Tovatt, whose final masterplan for the whole site was approved in May 1999.
Greenwich Millennium Village Ltd (GMVL), a partnership between Countryside Properties and Taylor Woodrow Capital Development, won the bid to develop GMV based on sustainable design and financial viability. The development brief required that 25% of the land and 20% of the housing units be allocated to affordable housing and that proposals meet the highest standards of building, landscape and urban design.
The London Borough of Greenwich ensured wide ranging public consultation throughout the planning process, involving local residents, community groups and statutory consultees. Planning approval for Maurer Court was granted in March 2001. This was initially for 194 units but was later increased to 199 units, achieved without alteration to the external envelope.
EPR Architects alongside Erskine Tovatt designed the three buildings that form Maurer Court. Maurer Court consists of a main block of 177 flats which wraps around three sides of the gated courtyard along John Harrison Way and the River Thames, a small block of five maisonettes on Teal Street on the south western side of the site and a block of 17 flats, a community space and plant room on the corner of Teal Street and Renaissance Walk.
