Granville New Homes is structured on the existing street pattern with the building layout taking priority over the streets. Forty on-street car parking spaces are provided close to the entrances. Tree planting between bays helps ensure that parking does not dominate the street scene .
Street pattern and building form integrate seamlessly with the existing neighbourhood. A pedestrian and cycle route along the pocket park allows for ‘desire lines’ and successfully links the two sections of the scheme. Dropped kerbs ensure ease of use for pedestrians with buggies, those with limited mobility and cyclists making use of this shortcut.
Pavements are uncluttered to allow easy pedestrian movement and all entrances are step-free, creating an inclusive and accessible scheme. Secure cycle parking is provided inside the courtyard of each block within easy access of the entrance.
Several elements create a strong sense of safety. Direct off-street entrances for all ground floor units and generous glazing overlooking the street helps ensure animation. However, the pocket park route is framed by two blank walls, making the space feel isolated, and the large flank wall of the young people’s centre detracts from passive surveillance along this street.
