Brewery Square
London
This high density project extends the historic character of its location to provide a dynamic urban experience in the modern idiom.
Brewery Square is situated in Clerkenwell, on the site of the old Allied Brewery. There are 19th century industrial buildings remaining in the vicinity. The footprint and scale of the layout creates a series of open spaces, connected by tight pedestrian routes. These encourage access from various directions.
The groups of buildings contain market and affordable housing, and commercial units. Apartment blocks sit on a podium that will house commercial units including shops, restaurants and an art gallery. Town houses cluster around a small semi-enclosed square, and three small blocks of affordable houses sit adjacent to a future office development.
Original York stone cobbles have been reused to excellent effect. The elevational treatment, whilst uncompromisingly 21st century, reflects the local industrial aesthetic. Zinc or copper faced panels enclose extensive areas of glazing, including dramatic bay windows.
