A handsome housing scheme next to Portsmouth’s historic dockyard which squares up to the surrounding buildings, including the Mary Rose and Victory museums.
The Admiralty Quarter site was originally a brewery and a car park. It was redeveloped to provide new housing and to invigorate the buildings along Queen Street. It is close to Gunwharf Quays, a previous Building for Life award winner.
Admiralty Quarter is made up of a block of housing above a car parking plinth that surrounds a private garden courtyard and a housing tower. The new tower responds to the scale of surrounding high-rise buildings and connects to the larger scale of the city, acting as a landmark for Queen Street and a marker for the dockyard. The garden courtyard creates a space that provides relief from the busy surrounding streets.
