Abode

Described by John Prescott as 'a model of the communities we have to build', Abode combines the sense of occasion afforded by one-off houses with the economies of volume house building.

Eighty-two dwellings range from single bedroom apartments at 57sq.m (614sq.ft), to five bedroom houses at 101sq.m (1087sq.ft). These are selling from £180,000 to £430,000 (2003). Three dwellings are affordable.

This is the second stage of a 2,800 dwelling development on a 81 hectare (200 acre) farmland site on the outskirts of Harlow. A tightly knit environment has been created that reflects the high densities of the traditional village. Dwellings surround communal open spaces. A 'home-zone' feel is provided with roads and pavements running through at a single level.

Designed to be full of incident, the elevational treatment uses a variety of massing, detailing, materials and colour. Plan forms are simple, with an emphasis on quality, light and space.
